ZoneAlarm + KB951748 = no connection
Wednesday, 9 July 2008

For those of you that didn’t see this at the other place: Microsoft Update KB951748 and ZoneAlarm woes
In short: ZoneAlarm + Security update for Windows (KB95174 = no internet connection.
Update
For those folks who don’t bother clicking through to my other blog post: the advice from ZoneAlarm is to uninstall the KB951748 hotfix until there [...]

Firebug fixed
Sunday, 29 June 2008

Great to see that the latest update to Firebug has fixed the issue that I reported about it breaking when you opened Firebug in a new window (see Firebug bug at the other place).
Next up, I hope that the alignment of menu items gets fixed in the next update to the Web Developer add-in … [...]

Audio playing too fast
Friday, 20 June 2008

Here’s a weird thing. Ever since installing my new webcam (Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 with QuickCam v11.7 software) and after using it for a while, mostly with Seesmic my MP3s play at about 3x or 4x normal speed.  They should like a chipmunk band!
I’m still trying to work out what the issue is.  Could it [...]

That’ll learn me!
Thursday, 15 May 2008

Today I thought I’d be useful and comment my CSS code, before I forgot what it all did. I have 16 files.
Well, clearly I’d already forgotten what some of the code did, and why it was written in that particular order, because when I went to commit the code this evening … it was [...]

Sync woes, reprise
Thursday, 21 February 2008

One of the problems with having to reinstall all my applications at work (on a new PC, which I’m 100% not complaining about) is having to re-synchronize my Microsoft Windows Mobile 6 PDA (O2 Xda Orbit) with Microsoft Outlook 2003.
You’d think it was like a conversation between two members of the UN, with a translator [...]

Lucky!
Friday, 15 February 2008

This afternoon I left a meeting with a member of the Office of the Principal at College Gate, walked past St Salvator’s Chapel and was … well, ‘dumped on’ from a great height by a passing seagull.
Just glad that didn’t happen in the meeting!

I hate spamming myself!

Spams #1 and #2
Don’t you just hate it when you come in to work on a Monday morning, fire up your e-mail client and discover that over the weekend you’ve been spamming yourself!
Yesterday I received an e-mail with the subject: “January 73% OFF”. This morning I received one that offered: “January 78% OFF”.
I reckon I’ll [...]

Safari 3.0.4 Beta for Windows upgrade?
Thursday, 17 January 2008

Today I upgraded to the latest version of Safari for Windows, version 3.0.4 Beta.
Unfortunately, for some reason it’s completely unusable. I can’t read any of the menus, and the displayed web pages are corrupt.
I guess that’s what “beta” means, then.
Update
I’ve uninstalled Safari, and then reinstalled 3.0.4 Beta but I still get the same corrupt screens.
I’m [...]

Switching off Firefox’s Quick Find
Thursday, 3 January 2008

The quickfind feature in Firefox has been annoying me today: I wasn’t able to type apostrophes in my blog form, and it also affected cut-and-paste.
So I turned it off.

In Firefox go to about:config
Right-click and select New > Boolean
Enter searchkeys.disable.all
Set it to true

How hard can it be to install Linux?
Sunday, 30 December 2007

Ah! see … folks go on and on and on about how lovely and shiny Linux is, and how much better it is than Windows.
So I dug out Jane’s old PC and fired it up with the Live CDs of:

Ubuntu 7.10 - didn’t load the Live CD
Ubuntu 6.06 - loaded Live CD, but wouldn’t install
Kubuntu [...]
